Pre-Congress Workshop 2 - Difficult Airway Management Workshop
Facilitators: Muhammad Maaya, Ina Ismiarti Shariffuddin, Wendy Teoh, Jaseemuddin Abu Bakar, Rhendra Hardy Mohamad Zaini, Vinodh Suppiah
Participants: 25

Airway management is part and parcel of an anaesthesiologist’s occupation. Most of the time, the patient’s airway can be managed without much problem. In certain circumstances, the anaesthesiologist faces challenging airway management either expected or worse, unexpected. Various devices are in the market nowadays to assist the anaesthesiologist in such matter. This workshop comprises lectures, hand-on stations and case discussions. The two lectures will touch on the various difficult airway gadgets and the management of “can’t intubate, can’t ventilate” situation. The hands-on stations will expose the participants to some of the airway management devices currently available in the market. Finally, there will be a few case scenarios related to the difficult airway up for discussion.

Course objectives: Upon successful completion of the course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Anticipate and manage the difficult airway
  2. Identify and manage the failed airway
  3. Understand the special case of the failed airway in obstetrics
  4. Perform an awake intubation in the predicted difficult airway.

Pre-Congress Workshop 3 - Ultrasound Guided Pain Blocks
Facilitators: Carina CF Li, Dong Eon Moon, Anwar Samhari Mat Arshad, Ng Kim Swan, Lai Hou Yee.
Participants: 25

This workshop, held in collaboration with Pain SIG, College of Anaesthesiologist, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, is helmed by Carina Li of Hong Kong, a formidable authority in ultrasound guided imaging for chronic pain block. Together with Moon, a widely published researcher from Korea, Gautam Das, a respected interventional pain physician from India, and our experienced local faculties, Anwar Samhari, Ng Kim Swan and Afifi Arshad, we promise an interesting exposure to the versatility of ultrasonography in providing excellent imaging in performing chronic pain blocks in the spine, head & neck, abdominal wall as well as lower back.

The workshop comprises of short lectures, demonstrations as well as hands-on stations on live volunteers and even on a spine-phantom to enhance understanding of spinal sonography.

Course objectives:

  1. Understand the basic principles of ultrasonography, particularly in the spine and paravertebral region
  2. Application of ultrasound in common chronic pain interventions
  3. Knowing the current evidences in ultrasound application in chronic pain block
  4. Consolidate knowledge through hands-on training on volunteers and phantom models

Pre-Congress Workshop 4 - Basic Transthoracic Echocardiography
Facilitators: Adi Osman, Mahathar Wahab, Julina Md Noor, Afifi Arshad, Shaik Farid Abdull Wahab
Participants: 25

This compact one-day basic echocardiography workshop is designed for healthcare providers who manage patients in the critical care setting. It is structured with lectures, interactive case studies and hands-on stations. The workshop is conducted by certified World Interactive Network Focused on Critical Ultrasound (WINFOCUS) trainers.

OBJECTIVES
To educate healthcare professionals on how to perform and interpret basic echocardiography examinations in the critical care setting.

  1. Discuss the basic fundamentals of ultrasound physics/instrumentation and recognise image artifacts.
  2. Introduction to basic echocardiography view
  3. Integrate the use of basic echocardiography in the critical care setting
Venue: Sarawak General Hospital

Pre-Congress Workshop 5 - Ultrasound Guided Regional Anaesthesia
Facilitators: Azrin Mohd Azidin, Julina Santhi Johami, Amiruddin Nik Mohamed Kamil, Mafeitzeral Mamat, Lim Teng Cheow, Mohd Shahnaz Hasan
Participants: 25

Organised by the Malaysian Special Interest Group In Regional Anaesthesia (MSIGRA)

This comprehensive one-day Ultrasound Guided Regional Anaesthesia workshop will cater for regional anaesthesia enthusiasts offering updates and developments in this ever-evolving field.  It is designed for practitioners of basic to intermediate expertise that incorporate, or wish to incorporate the use of real-time ultrasound imaging in their practice.

This workshop will provide its participants with the relevant and necessary information to increase knowledge and improve block performance.  It will also highlight the principles of ultrasound towards the safe practice of regional anaesthesia.

The workshop will include hands-on session and live demonstration on practical sonoanatomy and block performance of the upper and lower limbs, trunk and central neuraxial areas plus risk reduction in regional anaesthesia. Participants will have the opportunity to scan live models/volunteers and phantom models during the afternoon session.

Pre-Congress Workshop 6 - TIVA / TCI Workshop
Facilitators: Michael Irwin, Lim Thiam-Aun
Participants: 25

Coordinator: Marzida Mansor
In collaboration with: Abbvie Sdn. Bhd & Fresenius Kabi

Total Intravenous Anaesthesia (TIVA) is regaining its popularity once again due to development of newer drugs, better understanding of the pharmacology of current drugs & development of better drug delivery systems. With the increasing demands of complex surgeries & complicated patients, TIVA provides an alternative technique for anaesthetists faced with these difficult situations.
This one-day workshop aims to provide an opportunity for participants to discover new technology and safer techniques in anaesthesia, and to empower participants who would like to develop an interest in TIVA. The workshop will be led by anaesthetists experienced in the field of intravenous anaesthesia, who will introduce participants to pharmacology of newer TIVA drugs and conduct a live case demonstration showing the application of TIVA in anaesthesia. Participants will be provided with hands-on experience on the available drug delivery systems [Target Controlled Infusion (TCI) pumps] with the TIVA expert. Case discussion & forums will be held at the end of the workshop for participants to understand the wide-ranging applications of TIVA in anaesthetic practice.
